These pastors proved to be no push overs and were serious about the racing. Bro. Larry Cantrell from Ebenezer Baptist Church Won the Dollar General Shopping Cart qualifying and started on the pole with Bro. Bryan Baggett from Bible Baptist on the outside. In the second row inside was Brother Ronnie Thompson from Hermitage Church of the Nazarene in the #1 Car and Bro. Gary Dillard from Calvary Baptist on his outside..
When the Green Flag Dropped Bro. Cantrell held the lead coming off two and down the back stretch however during lap two Bro Baggett put a move on the outside and passed Bro Cantrell to edge ahead in his Greenbrier Bobcat #49 Dodge Neon on the next lap. Fans were already on their feet. Bro. Dillard had a firm grip on 3rd place in the 08 with Bro Thompson hot on his bumper…this went on for several laps with 2- two car battles until about midway of the race when Bro. Thompson finally got past the 08 car of Dillard.
Up front Bro Cantrell had stated to reel the 49 car of Bro. Bryan Baggett back in and was cutting the gap fast when he looked up and realized the #1 car of Bro. Thompson was clear of Bro. Dillard and starting to fill up his rear view mirror. Everyone started driving defensively and this action took a little pressure off Bro Baggett as he was leading at the mandatory caution on lap 12.. During the caution Bro. Baggett rolled a 5 which inverted the field for the last three laps of the race.
You could feel the tension growing as we had two guys on the front row were ready to get it on. Bro Dillard started the 08 on the pole for the last 3 lap segment. At the drop of the green Bro. Dillard got a good run going into turn one and he stuck his car deep into the turn one banking grabbing the lead from Bro. Thompson going down the back stretch and appeared to be in good shape until they went into turn three. Going into turn 3 and off 4 Bro. Thompson set him up and put a cross over move on Bro Dillard for the lead that would have made Dale Earnhardt Sr. proud. As they approached turn one Bro. Dillard was doing his best to hold his ground and hold Bro Thompson down but Brother Thompson was having none of that as he already had his front end up along side of the rear quarter panel of Bro. Dillard. As they drove off into turn one Bro. Thompson stood his ground and booted Bro. Dillard as they hit the banking spinning the 08 around and up into the turn 2 wall backwards. The crowd went to their feet screaming, clapping and yelling.
Needless to say the on track action had gotten a little heated and as one of the announcers joked they sure hoped we would not have to call for security when Bro. Thompson made his way back into the turn one area where Bro. Dillard was sitting against the wall. Bro. Dillard was grinding on the starter trying to get his Mopar powered product back in the race. Bro. Dillard got his ride fired back up and going only to his surprise that both he and Bro. Thompson were sent to the rear of the field by Track officials for being involved in a accident..
Now were set up for a Classic Green White Checkered Finish Highland Rim Style with Bro. Baggett leading them to the green with all four cars bunched up with each one trying to improve their position as quick as possible as time was running out. Bro. Baggett seemed to have the race in control until the white flag lap and coming down the back stretch Bro Cantrell was closing the gap on the 49 quickly and he was looking for a way around that 49 car. At the same time Bro. Thompson looked like he was shot out of a cannon coming from the rear of the field to made a move on the Outside of the 0 car all the way up in all the loose stuff for 2nd…he had Tires smoking &rubber squalling as they came off turn four for the Checkered flag. As they crossed the finish line Bro. Baggett from Bible Baptist Church took top honors..
This was a very popular win as over 70 of Bro Baggett’s Church congregation had shown up to support their pastor. Plus the car Bro Baggett was racing had recently been featured at the Local Turning of the Pig 4th of July celebration in Greenbrier where many children took part in wrapping the car in the Hunter Green and White BOBCAT Colors to raise money for the Greenbrier High School Band.. All the children that wrapped the car signed the hood and many of these children were on hand for their first time to see the Green and White #49 car race and now Bro Baggett had put their car in Victory Lane..
It was a Great Night of Racing and everyone had a blast and we cannot wait until the next Faster Pastor race. If this is any indication of the competition level we have some good racing to look forward to. If your church and pastor is interested in racing with us have them get in contact with Jerry Criswell at Highland Rim Speedway for a list of the remaining spots available for the 3 qualifying races.
