Mark Day takes top honors again in the Big Cumberland International Tractor and Equipment 100 Lapper.. 24 Late Models strong were on the premises for the Big Cumberland 100 lapper it was easy to see that the new rules package was going to make this a much tighter field than in the first 100 lapper. With a BiG crowd on hand for the 100 lapper it was Chris Whorten from Boaz Alabama showing the way in qualifying with Justin Ashburn less than 1/2 tenth behind him in second.. The qualifying time of the rest of the top 10 showed this was going to be a Really close race. These rest of the top five was separated by hundredths of a second. With a 6 inversion local Favorites Ricky Sanford and Wayne White would bring the field to the green.
At the drop of the green it was Sanford, White and Mark Day battling for the lead. Sanford lead the first couple laps and before Day gets by. A caution on Lap 15 bunches the field together again and Day quickly takes the lead during a 51 lap green flag run Day is in control until a caution on lap 66 for a spin in turn four. By this time Justin Ashburn has worked his way into the second position.. On the restart takes the lead on lap 68 and its a four car break away up front as Ashburn appears to have things going his way and then Day starts reeling him in looking to the inside of Ashburn on lap 83 and by lap 86 its Ashburn and Day side by side for the lead as Day finally regains the lead form Ashburn but now its Wayne White reeling in Ashburn in his Cumberland International Tractor and Equipment #25 Camaro.. As he begins to get closer and closer all of a sudden smoke and sparks erupt from the White machine and his day is finished with a blown engine on lap 91 only 9 laps from the finish.. This is setting up a run to the end with 10 cars still on the lead lap and the top 5 capable of winning if someone slips.
On the restart its Day with the lead as local favorite Bobby Terry is now moved up iinto the top 3 and is challenging Ashburn for the second spot.. A caution on lap 96 for a 2 car incident involving TW Fisher and pole sitter Chris Whorten off of turn four bunches everyone back up again.. Within 5 laps to go its always a single file restart and on the restart it is Day leading the group however no one is able to make a pass on Day and he Wins his 2nd 100 and winning his 2nd 1oo Lapper at Highland Rim Speedway this year.
All is all it was a GREAT RACE with lots of passing and tight competition with Day winning, 2nd Ashburn, 3rd Bobby Terry,
4th Ricky Sanford 5th Scott Gay.. Everyone is looking forward to the BIG SOUTHERN 200 Late Model Race on Oct, 19th along with the Big CIVIL War reenactment on the grounds with the Sons of the Confederate Veterans association.
